This chapter argues that Europeanness is an unstable and relational articulation of identity markers, institutional membership, and conduct that is distributed as a marker of civilization by those propelled to the position of proper Europeanness in particular historical moments. In particular, the chapter analyses how economic conduct emerged as a marker of Europeanness in the midst of financial crisis, and how it enabled Latvians to assert Europeanness in relation to Greeks who were rapidly losing it.
