About COMPAS
Overview
The Centre on Migration, Policy and Society (COMPAS) is a research centre at the University of Oxford directed by Professor Michael Keith. Since 2003, COMPAS has established an international reputation for original research and policy relevance. It undertakes multi-disciplinary research, publication, teaching, and user engagement with a broad set of academic and non-academic users worldwide.
COMPAS research covers a spectrum of global migration processes and phenomena, from conditions in places of migrant origins to institutions and activities that affect mobility to social and economic effects in receiving contexts.
COMPAS has over 20 staff members from various backgrounds and is actively involved in many international networks and projects. COMPAS is based within the School of Anthropology and Museum Ethnography and maintains strong links with departments across the University of Oxford.
Mission and aims
The mission of COMPAS is to conduct high-quality research to develop theory and knowledge, train the next generation of academics and policymakers in migration, inform policy-making and public debate, and engage users of research within the field of migration.
In line with this overall mission statement, our aims are:
- Academic advancement: reflecting and advancing theory, methods and multi-disciplinary understanding in the field of Migration Studies; contributing new empirical data; and supporting international collaborations and publications in the field of migration.
- Teaching: offering graduate programmes on migration at the master's and doctoral levels; offering expert training for policymakers and others interested in migration issues; and building capacity among migration researchers and practitioners.
- Informing policy-making and public debate: providing evidence and analysis to policymakers and to the wider public, and facilitating knowledge exchange and collaboration with relevant policymakers.
- Facilitating knowledge exchange with research users: establishing reciprocal relationships with individuals and organisations with experience of migration, including migrants and their organisations, government, business, international organisations, and third-sector and civil-society organisations.
- Maintaining long-term sustainability: operating efficiently as a centre and ensuring a diversified funding base that allows the undertaking of a long-term mission and vision.

COMPAS Development
Originally an ESRC-funded research centre, COMPAS is now broadly reliant on several separate activity streams for sustainability: research, teaching and knowledge exchange.
- Research: Our research is funded mainly through grants from UK research councils, charities, philanthropic organisations, and the European Commission. We currently have grants with the organisations listed below under 'Current Funders'.
- Teaching: Our teaching income comes from supervising graduate students enrolled in a range of MSc, MPhil, and DPhil courses at the University of Oxford.
- Knowledge Exchange: Our knowledge exchange income comes from our KE initiatives, namely the Migration Observatory and the Global Exchange on Migration, which generate income from research grants and consultancy work.
Developing research proposals at COMPAS
We are interested in developing research projects or consultancy work with organisations and individuals where the research aligns with our research strategy and topics. If you would like to discuss a research project, consultancy work or a funding opportunity, please get in touch with the Research Development Officer. It is also useful to discuss potential projects with the Head of Unit to confirm school support.
Please note:
- COMPAS does not have its own grants or stipends to award.
- If your project idea does not align with our research strategy and topics, we are unlikely to be able to support you.

Migration Oxford
Migration Oxford is an initiative and network that brings together academics working on migration and mobility from across the University of Oxford's research centres, divisions, and departments to foster interdisciplinary dialogue and collaborations.
Founded in 2017 and formerly known as the Migration and Mobility Network, Migration Oxford has been generously supported by The Oxford Research Centre in the Humanities (TORCH) and, since 2019, has been hosted by the Global Exchange on Migration, the knowledge exchange initiative at the Centre on Migration, Policy, and Society (COMPAS).
What we do
Migration Oxford organises networking and interdisciplinary academic events in addition to promoting relevant opportunities and calls for interest via our newsletter. Through our podcast and by showcasing the University of Oxford's migration expertise, Migration Oxford aims to facilitate access to the University's research on migration and mobility, promoting knowledge exchange between scholars and the public.
