Supervisor: Dr Carlos Vargas-Silva

College affiliation: Regent’s Park

Gilda is a DPhil student in Migration Studies based at COMPAS. With a background in economic migration and labour economics, Gilda recently became interested in forced migration research and its interdisciplinary nature at the intersection of economics, sociology, anthropology, and political economy. Gilda is particularly interested in researching the behaviour of refugee entrepreneurs in firm creation and management as well as the main pattern of entrepreneurship in resource-constrained and adverse environments. Her research focuses on displaced Syrian entrepreneurs and business owners in Jordan and Turkey analysed with both quantitative and qualitative lenses.

Gilda is also a consultant for the World Bank, where works on fostering the role of the private sector in refugees’ economic inclusion, and has previously worked for the Center for Mediterranean Integration, where she supported a program targeting refugees and host municipalities in the Middle East. Passionate about migration and the Middle East, she holds a Bachelor degree in International Relations with a minor in Middle Eastern Studies from the University of Naples “L’Orientale”, a Summer School degree in International Politics from the London School of Economics, and a Master Degree in Development Studies from the University of Bologna, where she defended a thesis on the Mediterranean migration and integration. Gilda likes travelling, music and photography, she is fluent in Italian, English, and French, and has a basic knowledge of Arabic and Spanish.
