About the talk

This talk will focus on how migration and remittances can be leveraged for development in low- and middle-income countries. After describing the stylised facts about migration and remittances, the speaker will highlight emerging policy challenges for managing migration, facilitating remittance flows, and making these flows more useful for developmental programs.

Speaker

Dilip Ratha is a globally recognised thought leader and pioneer in innovative financing for development, currently serving as Lead Economist and Economic Adviser at MIGA, World Bank Group. With nearly 30 years of experience, he specialises in mobilising private capital and remittances through groundbreaking tools such as diaspora bonds, remittance-backed securitisation, and political risk guarantees. He has played a pivotal role in shaping global development finance policy, integrating migration and remittances into the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals. Ratha founded KNOMAD, co-founded the Migrating out of Poverty Consortium, and initiated the African Institute for Remittances. A widely published and highly cited economist, his TED Talk has inspired fintech innovation globally. His earlier roles span academia, investment banking, and policy research, and he holds a Ph.D. in Economics from the Indian Statistical Institute.
