The DPhil in Migration Studies at the University of Oxford is now open for applications for entry in the Autumn of 2021.

The programme now has two cohorts of students, coming from many countries around the world and using a ‘migration lens’ to explore issues related to citizenship, education, ethnicity, identity, labour markets, security, and urbanism, among others. Here's our most up-to-date information on the programme.

The programme is offered on a full-time (3-4 years) and part-time basis (6-8 years), thereby accommodating traditional students and those who combine work and study.

Finding a supervisor

The programme is inter-disciplinary and offered jointly by the School of Anthropology and Museum Ethnography (SAME) and the Oxford Department of International Development (ODID). Therefore, those with the titles of Associate Professor or Professor in those two departments constitute the main candidates for supervision. Given the topic, looking at the individuals in the Centre on Migration, Policy and Society (COMPAS) or the Refugee Studies Centre (RSC) can be useful. However, migration research has many aspects, and supervisors are not limited to staff members of those centres. You can also approach others in these departments. Also, while it is useful to approach a supervisor before applying, this is not a requirement. You can suggest a name in the application or leave it blank and we will do our best to match you with the best available supervisor on the topic.

Funding

The University offers many scholarships such as the Clarendon scholarships and several based on the focus of the research and/or nationality of the applicant. Visit the University funding pages for more information. Also, there is an ESRC Migration Pathway for Scholarships on migration studies. Applications are also invited for a an ERC studentship in migration studies or anthropology for a project on emptying towns and villages in Eastern Europe and Russia.

We'd advise you start looking for external funding early, in case you are not offered one of the scholarships at the university or departmental level.

Deadlines

You should apply by the deadline set by the University which are Friday 13 November 2020 and Friday 22 January 2021.
