Non-citizens can be given a wide range of statuses, delimiting the legality and conditions of their residence, restrictions on length of stay, what rights they are and are not entitled to, whether they can proceed to citizenship, and so on. Status may change for exogenous reasons, but it may also be extended, altered or otherwise contested through a legal process. This legal process can be lengthy.
